Bone Mineral Density

Bone Mineral Density

Bone Mineral Density (BMD) scanning, also referred to as DEXA, utilizes dual-energy X-Ray absorptiometry to measure bone density. This scan provides essential information about bone strength, fragility, and fracture risk, making it a valuable tool for diagnosing conditions like osteoporosis and aiding both patients and healthcare providers in managing bone health.

FAQs

Yes, BMD scans require an appointment. You can book your scan by contacting our team via phone, visiting us in person, or submitting your referral. We’ll confirm the next available appointment time for you.

Preparation instructions will be shared when you book your appointment. Be ready to provide details such as previous BMD scan results and your current medication history. You may need to wear an examination gown, so wearing a comfortable two-piece outfit is recommended. Arrive at least 15 minutes early to complete any necessary paperwork and avoid delays.

Please bring the following items:

  • Your referral form from your healthcare provider.
  • Your Medicare or DVA card, if applicable.

A qualified radiographer will guide you through the process, explain the procedure, and assist with any preparation. During the scan, you’ll lie still on the BMD table while the scanner captures images of your spine, hip, and/or forearm. After the scan, a radiologist will review the results and prepare a detailed report for your referring doctor.

Most Medicare-eligible BMD scans are bulk-billed at Coastal Medical Imaging. However, some scans may involve additional fees. Our booking staff will inform you of any charges when you make your appointment.

Reports are typically ready within 24 to 48 hours. If your doctor has requested immediate results, let our team know. For urgent cases, we prioritise the scan and work with the radiologist to ensure your report is expedited as needed.
