MRI
MRI is a medical imaging technique that uses powerful magnetic fields and advanced computer technology to generate highly detailed images of the body. Unlike X-Rays, MRI does not use radiation, is painless, and is not known to have any harmful effects.
Coastal Imaging uses the Siemens Sometom 1.5T MRI scanner to perform a multi-parametic prostate examination. This includes routine imaging sequences, diffusion weighted imaging (DWI) and post contrast imaging with kinetic curve assessment and spectroscopy.
A recent Australian study with leading Australian Urologists and Radiologists showed that 1.5T MRI of the prostate was superior to the 3T MRI in detecting low grade cancers. The study also concluded a 1.5T was equivalent to 3T MRI in detecting higher grade cancers.
FAQs
In most cases, you can maintain your regular diet unless instructed otherwise. Wear loose, comfortable clothing and remove all jewellery, including watches. We recommend leaving valuables at home whenever possible. Avoid wearing makeup or hair products such as spray, gel, or mousse, as these can interfere with the scan.
You will lie on a table that slides into the MRI scanner, which resembles a tunnel. During the scan, you’ll hear intermittent knocking noises, and it’s crucial to remain completely still to ensure accurate images. In some cases, an injection may be administered to enhance the quality of the images.
Patients with certain metal or electronic implants, such as pacemakers, neurostimulators, cochlear implants, or metallic clips in the eyes, cannot undergo an MRI. If you’ve used welding or grinding tools, you may need an eye X-Ray to confirm there are no metal fragments present.
If you experience claustrophobia, this examination may feel challenging. Contact our team during business hours to discuss ways to make the procedure more comfortable.
No, the MRI is a painless procedure.
The entire examination usually lasts between 30 and 60 minutes.
