Ultrasound

Ultrasound

Ultrasound is a diagnostic imaging procedure that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce images of internal structures within the body. Qualified sonographers perform ultrasound exams by using a handheld device called a transducer, which is moved over the target area to generate real-time images. Coastal Medical Imaging offers a range of ultrasound services, including general, musculoskeletal, obstetric, breast, cardiac, and vascular imaging.

FAQs

Yes, all ultrasound exams require an appointment. You can schedule your appointment by contacting our team via phone, visiting us in person, or submitting your referral. We’ll provide you with the next available appointment details.

Preparation may be necessary for certain ultrasound scans, such as fasting for abdominal exams or arriving with a full bladder for pelvic ultrasounds. Our team will give you specific instructions when you book your appointment. You may be asked to wear an examination gown during the procedure, so wearing a comfortable two-piece outfit is recommended. Please arrive at least 15 minutes early to complete any required paperwork and avoid delays.

Please bring the following items:

  • Your referral form from your healthcare provider.
  • Your Medicare or DVA card, if applicable.
  • For work-related injuries, a WorkCover claim number may be required. Let our team know if you intend to lodge a claim.

An experienced sonographer will guide you through the process, explain the procedure, and help you prepare. You will typically lie on a bed for the scan, although some exams may require sitting upright. A gel will be applied to the skin or the transducer to ensure smooth movement and enhance image quality. The ultrasound produces live images displayed on a monitor. Once the scan is complete, a radiologist—a medical doctor specialising in imaging—will review the results and provide a report to your referring healthcare provider.

Coastal Medical Imaging bulkbills most Medicare-eligible ultrasounds. However, some examinations may incur a fee. Our team will inform you of any charges when you book your appointment.

Reports are generally ready within 24 to 48 hours. If your doctor has requested that you return immediately after your scan, please let our staff know. Urgent scans are prioritised, and we will coordinate with the radiologist to expedite your report if necessary.
